Couponing & Sales Terms

Couponing & Sales Terms are the terms used in relation to coupons, their terms & conditions and the type of coupon they are.  Same goes for sales terms, some can be used interchangeably.

It's good to know these terms and abbreviations before you start to make things a little bit easier on you.  If you understand the terms then you can easily see where the real deals are when browsing various sales sites.

Blinkies = Coupons that are in the store, usually located right by the product in a mechanical box that ejects them out.

BOGO or Buy One Get One = This can mean buy one get free or buy one get a certain percentage off the second product.

B#G# or Buy (whatever number) Get (whatever number) (ex: B2G1) = Same as above and can be replaced by any numbers.

BOGOF = Buy One Get One Free. 

CAT or Catalina = Coupon(s) that print at the end of your receipt after your transaction.

Doubling = When a store chooses to double the face value of a coupon. Most stores have a limit on how many coupons they will double, what days they double on, and up to what face value they will double.  For example, if you're grocery store doubles on Thursdays then that means if you have a $0.75 coupon they will actually take off $1.50 for that product.

CRP or Cash Rewards Program = Many retailers have programs where they reward you x amount of money to use only at their store on your next transaction when you buy x product.  The rewards print on the end of our receipt and some have expiration dates.  For example buy 2 toothbrushes and get $3 rewards.

DND or Do Not Double = Some coupons have this wording on it which means your store cannot double that coupon.

Door Busters or Early Bird = These are sales that are held for a certain number of hours early in the morning at stores.

ECB or  Extra Care Bucks (CVS) =  CVS cash rewards program.

FIC or Free Item Coupon = A coupon for a free item without stating that you have to buy something else.

Friends & Family Sale = These are sales that some stores hold where for a day or a couple of days they extend their employee discount to employee friends & family or the general public.

GM or General Mills or GM Insert = Manufacturer coupon insert that comes occasionally in the Sunday Newspaper.  General Mills makes many products. 


IVC or Instant Value Coupon (Walgreen's) =  Found in the monthy EasySaver Catalog and only good at Walgreen's.

IP or IPC or Internet Printable Coupon = Coupons that you print off the internet.

MFG or Manufacturer's Coupon = This is a coupon from the manufacturer of the product for that item, usually found in Sunday Newspapers, printed off the internet or mailed directly to you.

MIR or Mail-In Rebate = This is a coupon that you fill out and mail back along with your receipt in order to get a check back for the stated amount.

OOP or OPE or Out Of Pocket Expense = This is the amount of money that you will spend either after coupons and rewards or rebates are used or taking into account the rewards that you will get back.

P&G or Proctor & Gamble or P&G Insert = Proctor & Gamble, makers of many products. The insert refers to the monthly P&G coupon insert that comes in the Sunday newspaper.

Peelie = A coupon that you peel off the package.

Piggybacking or Stacking = This is a method that most stores allow where you use one store coupon together with one manufacturer coupon on one product. 

Q or C = Coupon.

RP or Red Plum = Red Plum is a coupon insert that comes in the weekly Sunday Newspaper.

RR or Register Rewards = This is the term various stores use for their cash rewards programs.

SS or Smart Source = This is a coupon insert that comes in the weekly Sunday Newspaper.

STC or Store Coupons = These are coupons that are valid only at the store they are for, Target for instance has coupons that you can print off their website and use in their store.

Tearpad = These are pads of coupons in the store usually located right by the products, you tear off a coupon to use on that product.
